Warm weather is finally catching up with the season, meaning it’s almost time for swimsuits, sundresses, and shorts! It also means the extra responsibility of shaving unwanted hair. If you’re like most women, you find shaving a burden, especially when it involves razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Luckily, there’s a better way to get rid of your unwanted hair. Laser hair reduction is gaining more and more popularity each year. It provides the peace of mind that you’ll never have to worry about unwanted hair and itchy bumps ever again. So many women and men have been turning to laser hair reduction to get out of their hairy situation, but many do not know how it works! We’re here to help by answering some of the most common client questions.
What is laser hair reduction?
Laser hair reduction is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It is the process of a laser beaming highly concentrated light into the hair follicles. Pigments in the follicles absorb the light and heat up to the point of singeing, which destroys the hair and disables the root from future hair growth.
Am I a candidate for laser hair reduction?
Both men and women are eligible for laser hair reduction. However, the process works best with dark hair. Since laser hair reduction targets the melanin (pigment) of the hair, those with light blonde, gray, or red hair may find the treatment to be ineffective.
What tools are used for the treatment?
At ANU Medical Spa, we use our Cutera truPulse Nd:YAG Laser. This laser is FDA-approved as the most effective, safest hair removal technology on the market. The truPulse Nd:YAG is extremely effective and safe and delivers permanent results. It is excellent for both light and dark skin tones allowing it to be used year round when your skin is tanned.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
Refrain from plucking and waxing for six weeks before treatment. You may shave as often as you like leading up to the treatment. You should avoid sun exposure in the treatment area for six weeks before and after the treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair reduction less effective and could make complications after treatment more likely.
What can I expect from the treatment?
During the procedure, your treated area is covered with gel and the truPulse Nd:YAG handpiece glides across your skin sending pulses of light to the hair follicle. Patients have reported feeling a mild pinching or stinging sensation.
Following the treatment, the area will be slightly red and swollen but will pass within a few hours. There may be regrowth of hair three to seven days after the treatment, however, these hairs are being shed as a result of the laser. After the treatment, it is recommended to wear sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
How many treatments will I need?
Usually each area takes three to six treatments until the hair is completely removed. The life cycle of hair takes on three phases: growth, regression, and resting. The laser treatment disables the hair that is in the active growth phase. These follow up visits are necessary because not all hairs will be in the same phase of growth.
What areas of the body can be treated with laser hair reduction?
The truPulse Nd:YAG can remove hair from almost any part of the body such as the face, arms, underarms, and back. It is also able to treat sensitive areas like the chest, nipples, and bikini line.
What are the risks of laser hair reduction?
Some patients may experience itching, redness for up to three days, swelling around the follicle for up to three days, and tingling or numbness.
Following the treatment, the treated area of skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help.
