Microneedling or Laser Genesis: Which is Right for You?

microneedling vs laser genesis

Our skin changes as we age. It is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean you have to give in to fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin imperfections. Women and men are discovering new ways to get their youthful shine back with a new moisturizer, healthy habits, or heading over to the spa for a skin care treatment. Moisturizing and making healthy choices are everyday habits that are simple enough to complete, but finding the right treatment for you at a medical spa requires a little more thought. Two effective anti-aging treatments are offered at ANU Medical Spa in New Jersey: microneedling and laser genesis. These treatments go deeper than any new moisturizer or health craze. They are similar in the benefits they provide, but their approaches are very different. So which is right for you?

Microneedling vs. Laser Genesis

Benefits of both treatments

  • Reduces appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces pore size
  • Improves scarring
  • Improves sagging skin
  • Reduces discoloration and pigment issues
  • Boosts collagen production for firmer skin

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive treatment that uses an FDA-approved electronic pen device, called Dermapen®. It uses multiple fine needles to pierce and needle the skin, which causes collagen remodeling and enhances skin rejuvenation. Different from an exfoliating treatment, microneedling penetrates the lower layers of the skin to kickstart the body’s wound healing response to begin producing new collagen.

Compared to laser genesis, microneedling is slightly more intense due to the mechanical nature of the treatment. The treatment only takes about 30 minutes, and there is virtually no downtime. Additionally, there are less potential side effects of microneedling, and it is safe to use on all skin types. After a few treatments, the results can last for months if taken care of properly.

Laser genesis

Laser genesis is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment that gradually stimulates new skin growth and collagen production by using laser technology. Laser genesis targets the upper dermis layer of your skin. Heat is used to boost collagen regrowth with no downtime and minimal discomfort. In fact, the laser genesis procedure has been described as calming and therapeutic. Due to its non-invasive nature, laser genesis is performed without the use of a topical anesthetic.

Laser genesis treatments tend to be more selective. By design, lasers use light as energy. This allows lasers to have a specific target to treat in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. Similar to microneedling, laser genesis requires a few rounds of treatment to see desired results. However, laser treatment results tend to be longer lasting (up to 12 months).

With both treatments, there are things you can do to ensure the longest lasting results:

  • Use sunblock year-round
  • Limit smoking and drinking
  • Eat healthy and exercise regularly
  • Come back for follow-up appointments
  • Follow a recommended skin care routine

Deciding what’s right for you

If you’re looking to proactively treat your skin, microneedling is a quick and low-risk way to see the results you want. If you have a more specific skin issue to address, a laser genesis treatment might be better for you.

Want to try out microneedling? This month at ANU Medical Spa in New Jersey, microneedling is just $199, normally $350. For an extra fee, you could add on a vitamin C infusion for even healthier skin. See the monthly special here.
