Changing Your Skin Care with the Seasons

skin care for season changes

For better or worse, fall is coming, and the weather is soon going to be changing to cooler, drier conditions. This change in the seasons can also bring big changes in your skin. There are things in your skin care routine that should stay the same throughout the year but to ensure your skin is happy and healthy all year long, you should try out different methods for each season!

How skin is affected by seasons

When the weather starts to turn colder, you might feel your skin being a little tighter and drier. Skin likes consistency, so when the weather changes, it’s like a shock to the system. In the cooler months, the skin must work harder to maintain hydration, which can lead to inflammation and dry skin.  Another factor in your skin health is the lifestyle changes that come with cooler weather. People typically start to take hotter showers and heat their homes, which can take even more of a toll on the skin.

How to take care of skin during the season change

For the switch from warmer to cooler weather, it’s recommended to avoid taking long showers and to not make the water too hot (or not hot at all). It’s also important to use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer afterward.

When spending hours in the sun, your skin undoubtedly needs a little TLC to get rid of dead skin. Exfoliation is important during the season switch to promote healthy skin. This month, ANU is offering a dermaplaning facial that can do the trick to exfoliate and hydrate! Learn more here.

For your daily skin care routine, we recommend adding a hydrating serum into your regimen. This should not replace your moisturizer! It’s just an added step to help your skin stay hydrated and supple.

Just because the seasons are changing doesn’t mean everything about your regimen has to change. There are a few core pieces of your routine that can stay the same:

  • Sunscreen: cooler weather doesn’t mean sun damage to your skin is impossible! SPF 30 or more is your best bet to protecting your skin.
  • Eye cream: eye cream is a necessary step all year round to minimize dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines.
  • Masks: weekly face masks can make your home feel like a spa and keep your skin hydrated and nourished.
  • Moisturizer: no matter the season, a daily moisturizer is necessary! If you don’t already have your go-to moisturizer, look for ones that contain glycerin, ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
